The CRUK Convergence Science Centre is a partnership between Imperial College London and The Institute of Cancer Research. In collaboration with our international partners we arrange a regular international seminar 'Converging on Cancer' on the topic of interdisciplinary cancer research. Our partners are
In this series, we bring together speakers from across these institutions to present their research and how they use convergence science to answer cancer-related questions.
Thursday 3rd July, 10-11am BST, 11-12pm CEST, 5-6pm SGT
This event will be chaired by Prof Kristijan Ramadan, from Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, NTU.
Imaging Life and Death - Novel MRI Methods for Detection of Cellular Function and Metabolism
Prof. Schilling conducts research in the field of translational molecular imaging. His research focusses on the development of novel methods in the area of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Together with his group he characterizes and validates imaging biomarkers. Interdisciplinarity is an essential characteristic of this area of research which combines the development of physical methods, the chemical characterization and synthesis of molecular sensors, as well as the investigation of biological and medical research questions.
How to protect an ending: inhibition of non-homologous end joining by the telomere-bound shelterin complex
In eukaryotic cells, individual linear chromosomes are preserved by specialised nucleoprotein complexes at the chromosome ends called telomeres. A central function of these structures is to block non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), a highly active DNA repair pathway that has the potential to join two or more chromosomes together if active at the natural chromosome ends. Dr Douglas' talk will include recent work from his lab showing how a primary protein component of telomeres, the shelterin complex, is able to switch off NHEJ by binding directly to a core component of the non-homologous end joining pathway.
