The Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London is hiring a Training Manager for the CRUK Convergence Science Centre. The role involves overseeing student recruitment, registration, and progression for PhD students, intercalated PhD (MB-PhD) students, clinical fellows, and postdoctoral researchers. The Training Manager will also be responsible for developing and delivering high-quality training programs, collaborating with cancer-related training programs, and providing career development support for convergence researchers. Additionally, the role involves coordinating Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) activities and fostering relationships with relevant organizations. Candidates should have a degree in biological, engineering, or physical sciences, significant experience in managing training programs, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
As the Training Manager for the CRUK Convergence Science Centre, you will play a vital role in the effective management of student recruitment, registration, and progression. This includes overseeing internal calls for PhD and MB-PhD proposals, conducting initial application remit and eligibility checks, and managing the project selection process by collaborating with the Training and Clinical Training Subcommittees. You will be responsible for coordinating the student recruitment processes, advertising projects, conducting candidate selection and interviews, and extending offers to successful candidates while providing feedback to all candidates. Ensuring smooth registration and induction processes for new students across partner institutions will be a core responsibility. Additionally, you will actively contribute to attracting students from diverse backgrounds, implementing best practices for recruitment, and conducting unconscious bias training.
In your role, you will develop and implement a comprehensive project plan for the logistical delivery of training events, including an induction, mentoring, and bespoke training activities for the CRUK Convergence Science Centre. Working closely with the Training Subcommittee and other cancer-related training programs, you will design bespoke events to support the development of future leaders in convergence science. Tracking key performance indicators for the training programs, you will identify areas for improvement based on participant feedback. Collaborating with education and registry teams at Imperial and the ICR, you will ensure the training program aligns with the institutions' requirements.
Furthermore, as the lead on Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) matters at the Centre, you will contribute to tackling health inequalities, particularly concerning cancer health outcomes for individuals from minority ethnic groups. You will support Patient Involvement and Engagement activities related to training and EDI initiatives. In line with funders' expectations, you will provide support and tools for researchers to engage with patients and the public, recognizing the importance of patient involvement in funded grants.
We are seeking a highly motivated Training Manager to join our team. As the ideal candidate, you should have significant experience in managing a training program in an academic environment, with a track record of successfully engaging stakeholders at all levels, from PhD students to senior academics. Your understanding of the current challenges in training for convergence researchers and clinicians will be crucial in shaping our training program's success. A passion for applying engineering and physical sciences to cancer research is essential, as is your commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in all aspects of our training initiatives. You will work closely with EDI activity teams at Cancer Research UK, the ICR, and Imperial College to coordinate and implement EDI strategies and activities.
The College is currently trialling a Work Location Framework until early 2023. Hybrid working may be considered for this role and the role holder may be expected to work 60% or more of their time onsite, with 40% the minimum time spent onsite.
