Professor Jonathan Weber steps down as Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC) Director and from the CRUK Convergence Science Centre Governance Board.

The Centre extends its heartfelt thanks to Professor Jonathan Weber (image right) for his invaluable contributions to the CRUK Convergence Science Centre. As a key figure in establishing the partnership between Imperial College London and the Institute of Cancer Research, Professor Weber’s efforts have been instrumental in advancing the Centre's mission. We express our gratitude as he steps down from our Governance Board.

Professor Weber, a globally renowned expert in HIV/AIDS research, has dedicated over 40 years to improving treatments and care for patients with HIV and AIDS. His outstanding contributions were recently recognised with the award of a CBE for services to global medical science. From 2018 to 2023, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London, before being succeeded by Professor Deborah Ashby. He also led the Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC) from 2015, a strategic partnership designed to fast-track the translation of scientific discoveries into patient care improvements, medical education, and public health initiatives. He has recently been succeeded by Professor Mark Thursz in this role.

Professor Axel Behrens, Scientific Director of the CRUK Convergence Science Centre says:

"Professor Jonathan Weber was instrumental in establishing the CRUK Convergence Science Centre, he has always been an advocate for convergence science and the convergence approach and I am immensely grateful for his support throughout the years."

Professor Graham Cooke, Vice Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Medicine, has now joined our Governance Board to succeed Professor Weber.

We are deeply appreciative of Professor Weber's leadership and guidance, which have been critical in shaping the Centre’s vision and achievements.
