Tackling Cancer Resistance with Insights from the Warburg Effect
Cancer cells process glucose differently from normal cells, producing high levels of lactate through a process called the Warburg effect. This unique metabolism helps cancer cells repair their DNA and resist chemotherapy.
Recent research by Prof. Axel Behrens and his team found that lactate enables cancer cells to repair DNA damage more effectively. They discovered that lowering lactate levels with a repurposed anti-epileptic drug can make cancer cells less able to repair themselves and more sensitive to chemotherapy.
