The Cancer Research UK Convergence Science Centre PhD Programme aims to train future convergence scientists by supporting novel and impactful PhD proposals that will equip students with cutting edge research skills.

 

 

We are offering funding for proposals in the following areas:

The Cancer Research UK Convergence Science Centre PhD Programme aims to train future convergence scientists by supporting novel and impactful PhD proposals that will equip students with cutting edge research skills. Trainee's will be supervised by cancer and engineering and physical sciences (EPS) experts from the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and Imperial College London.

 

What is available?

We are pleased to announce that funding is available for up to 14 PhD studentships across our diverse training portfolio. These are highly competitive awards that will provide training to exceptional candidates who could become world leaders in cancer research. Our awards are complemented with tailored mentoring and skills development initiatives that will equip students with the confidence and knowledge required to do brilliant things.  We want to hear from you, and we are here to support you for the entirety of the application process and for the duration of the studentship if you are a successful applicant. You may apply to one or all of the following opportunities; however, you cannot submit the same proposal to the different schemes.  

 

       1. Clinical Research Training Fellowships 

 

We are pleased to invite expressions of interest for Clinical Research Training Fellowships, starting in the 2022/23 academic year. These prestigious Fellowships aim to support the training of future clinical academics in cancer research. They provide an exceptional opportunity for clinical trainees to gain world class training in any research field related to cancer and to convergence science.

Up to six CRUK funded fellowships are available and will be allocated equally across Imperial and the ICR. Imperial applicants must submit convergence science projects. Fellowships are typically three years in duration and provide funding for a clinical salary, home tuition fees and consumables.

       2. Convergence Science Non-Clinical PhD Studentships

 

We are pleased to announce that funding is available for our highly competitive non-clinical PhD studentships which will train the next generation of discovery scientists through joint supervision from Imperial and ICR researchers. Candidates will spend their time working across both institutions with supervisory teams reflecting convergence science expertise. Up to three studentships are available and our offer is inclusive of a fixed annual stipend, a research consumables budget and home fees for a period of four years. Funding for overseas fees is not provided; however, offers can be made to overseas students should you secure support for the difference in international fees.

We are looking for proposals suitable for a four-year PhD project aligning to our strategic thematic area: Therapy Monitory and Therapy Resistance; our aim is to develop technologies and methodologies to improve the monitoring of therapeutic response in cancer patients.

 

   Supervisor connection meeting

We are aware that the opportunities for collaborations between Imperial and ICR supervisors may not always be obvious. To address this, we propose the building of cross-institutional supervision teams via an online meeting on September 16^th, 2022, the aim is to showcase the breath of engineering and physical sciences expertise and the cutting-edge cancer research undertaken across the two institutions. Supervisors attending this meeting will be given the opportunity to present two slides on their research to help connect and integrate approaches in the creation of a PhD research proposal.        3. Convergence Science Intercalated PhD Pathway

 

We are pleased to welcome preliminary applications to our flagship intercalated PhD (iPhD) programme which enables exceptional medical undergraduates who are interested in clinical academic careers to incorporate a PhD into their medical education. Studentships are fully funded inclusive of a generous stipend, home fees and a fixed consumables rate over three years.

 

Up to five studentships are available and application must outline novel convergence science research. The studentships are for 3 years in duration and preliminary applications are invited from Imperial and ICR supervisors. We encourage cross-institutional and multidisciplinary supervisory teams although Imperial academics from distinct disciplines working together are eligible to apply.
