CRUK workshop-Working towards better biological model systems for cancer prevention research

11 Jul 2023, 10:00 AM

Tuesday 11th July 2023, Royal Society, London 10am to 5.30pm

With cancer incidence increasing, prevention research is critical for saving lives and reducing pressure on global health systems. A new era of biological tools and insights has unlocked an opportunity to transform what’s possible in cancer prevention. However, we’ve heard from our research community that a potential barrier of bringing fundamental biological insight into prevention research is a lack of suitable biological models, and so we want to tackle this challenge together.

CRUK are inviting those with expertise in developing model systems, together with biologists, population researchers, clinicians, and others to explore the opportunities for better biological model systems to enable precision prevention approaches. It will provide an invaluable opportunity to expand your research network and potentially find new collaborators to work with on a future Biology to Prevention Award application.

The day will start with keynote speakers setting out the needs and opportunities for biological models relevant to prevention research. This will be followed by themed roundtable discussions between participants as you consider what are the needs of the model systems for prevention, what are the research gaps and opportunities to exploit, followed by a brainstorming session to share research ideas and discuss future directions.

This workshop promises to be an interactive and stimulating meeting and we are seeking participants from a range of backgrounds, whether or not you currently consider yourself a cancer prevention researcher. Please complete this form to express your interest to attend by 20th June 2023 to secure your place, as spaces are limited. Note that registration may close earlier if there is high demand.

CRUK will cover your registration for the workshop and provide refreshments and lunch during the day. CRUK will also contribute up to £200 towards standard advance rail/travel fares in specific circumstances (for instance for early career researchers).
