CRUK Convergence Science Centre /MedTechOne Proof-of-Concept Workshop

30 Jun 2023, 13:00 PM

The CRUK Convergence Science Centre and MedTechONE are launching a joint Proof of Concept (PoC) Call for translational Cancer Research, to offer up to £20k to support selected PoC studies.

In preparation to the call, we will organize a workshop on 30th June (13:00-15:00, Sir Michael Uren Hub, Imperial College), to encourage the development of collaborative PoC studies in cancer technologies and devices around two distinct clinical areas:

  • Cancer Therapy Monitoring
  • Novel interventions in cancer treatment (excl. Medicinal Products).

Places for the workshop are limited. To apply, please complete the simple Expression of Interest form (click the link) by 16th June 2023, 5pm.

Remit:

  • Cancer therapy monitoring: This includes technologies & devices that can be used directly during therapy to assess the precision of the intervention and/or the immediate response to the treatment as well as devices monitoring the medium to long term response to therapy, particularly technologies usable at home, preventing therapy failure, re-hospitalisation and relapses or improving the patient wellbeing and quality of life. Examples: Wearables, Intra-operative monitors, biosensors, imaging technologies…

  • Novel interventions in cancer treatment (excl. Medicinal Products): Surgery and radiotherapy remain the most important curative option for most solid malignancies. Additionally, we will also be assessing novel therapies and image-guided interventions. Examples: Robotics, therapeutic implantables, injection device, guiding technologies…

Through our joint call, we hope to support PoC work which would make a significant contribution to subsequent larger translation funding applications (typically Impact Acceleration Account, NIHR i4i, MRC DPFS).

Eligibility:

The workshop aims at pairing engineers/technologists with an innovative medical technology or device idea, with clinical experts, and help them develop a Proof-of-Concept study plan, for a subsequent application to the Joint PoC Call. Existing collaborations are also welcome if you already have a clinical partner. Both ICR and Royal Marsden researchers are welcome to apply with an Imperial partner.

Engineers/technologists developing a technology or device that could fit this remit, at any career stage, from Early Career Researcher (with Principal Investigator’s support) to Clinical Academic and Academic are welcome to apply to attend the workshop.

You must have discussed your idea (and related Intellectual Property) with Imperial Industry Partnerships and Commercialisation ahead of the workshop.

If you have any questions, please mailto:a.roques@imperial.ac.uk

Based on this, we aim to select up to 10 technologies to take part in the PoC Study Planning workshop.

Notifications will be sent by email by 23 June 2023.

We look forward to hearing more about your technology!
